Lots of people have questions about careers counselling. Hopefully this will answer some of yours.
If you have other questions, please shoot me an email – tom@careerchamp.com.au
Who should talk to a careers counsellor?
Anyone who would like to talk about their personal and professional future. Careers counsellors can help people of all ages and from all walks of life to explore their options and plan the next few years.
Who can book a session with you?
Anyone who’s left or graduated mainstream school. I’ve worked with people of all ages, but spend a lot of my time working with young people between the ages of 18 and 30.
What can we talk about?
Whatever is most important to you at the moment.
This might include:
- Exploring your career options and finding careers that might interest and suit you
- Planning a pathway to your preferred industry/career, if you already have an idea
- Choosing tertiary courses, changing between courses, and/or finding alternative pathways to university
- Making applications to undergraduate or postgraduate study
- Enrolling in a new course and settling in to uni/TAFE
- Developing strategies to find and land jobs that interest you
- Improving your skills at job applications, job interviews, and negotiating conditions
- Applying for internships and graduate programs
Do you offer face-to-face or Zoom sessions?
I offer both face-to-face (in Brisbane) and Zoom or phone sessions.
Where do you hold your face-to-face sessions in Brisbane?
If you’d like to meet in-person, we’ll meet at your favourite local café. ☕Â
Do you only work with people in Brisbane?
No. I’m happy to chat to you wherever you are via Zoom or phone – Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, other parts of Queensland or a totally different state.
Are you qualified to provide careers counselling?
Yes. I have four different qualifications, including a professional qualification in Careers & Transition Education that’s recognised by the Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA).
I’ve also been working in education since 2014, and as a Careers Counsellor since 2016.
Are you part of any professional associations?
Yes!
I’m a Professional Member of the Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA) and the Queensland Association of Student Advisors (QASA). This means I do professional development every year to make sure I’m up-to-date on what’s happening in the labour market, the job market, universities, TAFEs and elsewhere.
I’m also the Vice-President of the Queensland Division of the Career Development Association of Australia, which is a lot of fun and means I get to organise professional development for careers counsellors around Queensland.
Do you offer any pro bono sessions?
Yes. I offer a few different sessions that are pro bono or compassionately priced.
Session length | Compassionate price |
20 minutes | free |
40 minutes | $30 |
1 hour | $45 |
2 x 30 minute sessions | $45 |
Do I qualify for compassionate pricing?
Compassionate pricing is available for people experiencing hardship. If you believe you have grounds to access compassionate pricing, please let me know a little bit about your situation. If you hold a Centrelink concession card you’ll automatically qualify and won’t need to give further details.
